Linkbaiting Campaigns for SEO – How to Choose Your Bait

Viral content is the new king of the net … but unlike real viruses, it is surprisingly hard to ‘catch’ the idea of how to create it! Once you understand the idea of viral ‘hooks’, though, you’ve created a nice fertile breeding ground for that viral content to multiply within your mind. Then it will ultimately be published on your blogs, earning you lots of links and SEO success. Today we explain the hooks that all viral content has, to help you re-create them for your own SEO work.

There are 7 main hooks that are used in linkbaiting content for SEO:

  • A news hook
  • A resource hook
  • A humour hook
  • A contrary hook
  • An attack hook
  • An ego hook
  • An incentive hook

If you’ve spent much time reading blogs, you’ll probably be able to think of a few examples of each that you’ve read. Here are a couple of notes on creating each, for your own SEO purposes.

A news hook

MUST be very fresh. If you aren’t constantly on the net, looking out for breaking and trending stories, and if you aren’t able to add a fresh perspective to a story, you shouldn’t try to publish this sort of linkbaiting content. You’ll also need a decent readership to make use of these stories for SEO.

A resource hook

These are the easiest type for most businesses to create, and the great thing about resource-based linkbait content is that as long as you follow a few basic best-pratcices when you create it, the amount of exposure you get will be almost directly proportional to the amount of work you put in. Create a better resource, get more links and SEO-love. Your resource can be an authority list, a tool, a walk-through or a guide.

A humour hook

These can be difficult for corporate sites to pull off. Humour inevitably offends some people … unless there are pets or children involved! Keep these posts relevant to your business, and run them past everybody at the company for a negative reaction. If you find a single one, keep looking.

A contrary hook

Disagree with a popular opinion, or one popular person’s opinion on something. However, you’ll need to be tactful – otherwise you’ll gain SEO success, but lose respect.

An attack hook

Also known as ‘being controversial’. This works well for some, but be aware that people will constantly be wondering when you’ll attack them, if you make it a habit.

An ego hook

Stroke the ego of somebody you want a link from, by asking them for an interview, or giving them an award. A great way to get those single, valuable authority links.

An incentive hook

Offer samples or prizes in exchange for links, or run a content with an awesome prize to encourage links to flow naturally – great for SEO.

Deciphering Google-ese: How to Know if You’ve Gotten a Google Penalty

Just like women (or just like men, depending on your gender!), the ways of Google are mysterious. Deciphering its laws is full of conjecture, testing, personal experience and word of mouth. It’s almost like a religion ;-) . If you have noticed a sudden drop in your Google rankings lately, you may be wondering whether you have incurred a Google penalty. While fixing this unfortunate occurrence is a whole ‘nother set of posts, today we’ll explain how to determine the type of SEO penalty you may have suffered and point to some initial steps you can take to get your web marketing back on track.

First SEO check: Is your site still indexed?

That is, when you do a search in Google for site:www.yourbusinesswebsite.com.au, do you still see pages from your site?

If you don’t: Your site is probably banned from Google (unless it is too new to have been indexed yet). To get banned, you need to do something really awful … your mistake will probably be easy for an internet marketing specialist to identify. Get help, and file a re-inclusion request.

If you do: See below.

Second SEO check: Does your site still show up in results when you search for your domain name, or your business name within “parentheses”?

If you don’t: There may be issues with the validity of some of your links, or there may be some issues with your content that are viewed by Google as on-site spam. If you haven’t updated your site in a while, it is highly likely that SEO techniques that were acceptable back when they were implemented on your domain are now seen as black hat. Keyword stuffing is a good example, or you may have links from a site that has been found to be engaging in black hat internet marketing techniques.

If you do: See below.

Third SEO check: Do you still rank for any reasonably unique phrases within your title tags, in the top 10-20 results?

If you don’t: It may just be that links that previously held lots of weight in your link popularity equation have been devalued, for one reason or another.  Or there may have been some well-marketed competitor sites developed in your niche.

If you do: There’s no problem – you may have just noticed a drop in rankings. Get your internet marketing experts onto the case!

Professional SEO Tips to Learn (Part 1)

Articles about SEO tips are the most researched stuff in the search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN. This event only means that there are lots of people, most probably internet marketers, who want to learn more about SEO and its industry. Just to be of a little help to those information hungry people, let me enumerate some SEO tips.

(a) Mutual linking or link exchange is not already encouraged due to its potential to abuse the privilege on links. However, this can be beneficial if the two parties linking to each other are related. To make this strategy work, you must do link exchange only with industry related websites.

(b) Search engines love text and more information. Thus, you must satisfy them with informative text. It is not enough that your storefront, which is your website, contains the image and description about the product. You must also include information about what benefits it can give and the instruction in order to let the customers know on how to maximize its use. You may include history if necessary.

(c) Keywords are the keys for visitors to get to your site. That is why keyword research is very important. It is not enough to use only competitive keywords that keyword tools suggest; you have to think like an internet shopper. Mutual linking with industry-related websites, making your site informative, and doing the right keyword research are important in SEO. However, you must also know how to optimize your site with on-page optimization process.

(d) Web page title is important and the content. This is the basis of ranking your site according to relevant keyword phrases. That is why making it unique is a must. You can get away with search engines because even if your site content may just be the same with others but written in your own words, search engine robots will not know. However, you will be having problems with your visitors. Visitors are humans and have brains; they certainly will know if your site is unique or a copycat.

Since search engines rank web pages and not websites, each web page must be optimized appropriately and ethically. Higher ranking web pages and total search engine optimization success is often accounted from unique web page title and web content

(e) You must also stuff your content with keywords, but do not overdo it. Overstuffing of keywords in your web page content is considered spamming. Both search engines and visitors hate it. This even would lead you to losing search engine ranking and visitors as well–not to mention the loss in sales.

Some of the SEO tips we have discussed from previous blog entries (Part 1 and Part 2) include (a) exchanging links with related websites, (b) writing informative content, (c) keyword researching, (d) writing unique web page title and content, and (e) employing keywords are not enough. There are more.

(f) You should use target market’s language in communication. Speaking in customer’s language is the best way of earning sales. You need to explain to them what products and services you offer and how these products can help them in their daily life. Using the language of your target market can bridge the regional differences between you and your client. Misunderstandings are avoided this way. Aside from that, you also help the search engines to understand your business, making your ranking better. This can be achieved by being specific in your choice of words. This is because search engines are robots; they cannot read between the lines.

In terms of what keywords to be used, it is also important to include area-specific ones. For instance, if you are offering computer rental services in Chicago, you may have “computer rental in Chicago.”

(g) Monitor your site statistics is an important task in search engine optimisation. Using tools to determine which keywords are leading more visitors to your website, which websites are delivering more traffic for your site, which web page is getting lower traffic and many other things are a great help. You may use SiteSuite or Google Analystics.
