Internet marketing, along with its largest component – SEO – is really coming into maturity as an industry. So much so that we often tend to forget that there are quite a few people out there who don’t understand how SEO, or how the process of engaging SEO services, works. Today we start a series which answers all the basic questions that newbies to SEO services need to know!

  1. What is search engine optimisation?
Broadly, search engine optimisaiton (SEO) is the process of manipulating (though not in a bad way!) content both on your website and on the internet in general, to help your site show up higher in the search results when someone Goggles for a keyphrase related to your business.
  2. Why should I care about SEO?
Because the web is becoming more and more integral to our lives. Even if you personally spend little time on the net, there are 400 million people worldwide (around 92% of internet users) who turn to Google, Yahoo or MSN BEFORE the Yellow Pages, before their local noticeboard, etc to discover the best place to get a product or service. You don’t have to sell online to get customers through your website.
  3. Is SEO all about spamming and incoherent website copy?
Not at all. You’re thinking of an older style of internet marketing, when Google algorithm was much simpler and more focused on the density of keywords – how many times a particular search term appeared in your text relative to the whole.
Neither is white-hat SEO about spamming, in any way, shape or form.

Stay tuned – we’ll be going through more critical questions on SEO for newbies this week!
